This doll is a representation of the lead character from the opera Madame Butterfly made by Nishi Co. Ltd. of Japan between 1969 and 1975. The opera is in three acts (originally two) by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is based on the short story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long, which in turn was based on stories told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll and on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti. The doll measures 7.5” L x 8” W x 17” H including the base.
In contrast to many countries where dolls are designed mostly as playthings, for centuries, Japanese dolls were and are created as art pieces. They are essential elements of the nation's culture and Hinamatsuri (The Doll Festival) is dedicated to them every Spring. There are many types of traditional dolls representing a variety of life such as children, babies, imperial court, warriors, heroes, fairy tale characters, gods and also people of daily life.

She wears a red kimono embellished with an intricate gold floral-butterfly pattern and lined with red silk. The obi (belt) is gold and silver in a checkerboard pattern with white silk along the top mimicking fur trim. Her hair is elaborately styled holding kanzashi, e.g. a butterfly, flowers, ribbons and tassels. The doll is somewhat poseable and is attached to a wooden base.
